Bantu Bungane The Voice That Carries Light

When Bantu Bungane walks into the studio for our cover interview, there’s a calm energy about her. She greets everyone warmly, and the room seems to ease instantly. Her voice — the same one that wakes thousands of South Africans on Reaching Higher every week — carries a quiet confidence that feels both soothing and sincere.

“I actually never dreamed of being on radio,” she shares. “Growing up, I struggled with self-esteem because of my deep voice. I didn’t think it was special; I thought it made me stand out in the wrong way.”

It’s hard to imagine that now, considering how effortlessly that very voice commands attention. For nearly a decade, Bantu has been one of Link FM’s most recognised presenters — a storyteller whose purpose is rooted in connection and faith.

“As a child, I always loved words,” she recalls. “I’d gather my family around and tell them stories about things I’d imagined or seen that day. I didn’t realise it then, but those moments were planting seeds for what I do now.”

Her journey into broadcasting started with a nudge from a family member. “My cousin once said, ‘You actually have a radio voice,’” she says. “At first, I laughed it off. But when Link FM put out a call for presenters, I decided to try. I sent in a demo, and to my surprise, they called me in. From my first day on air, I felt such peace — like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.”

That leap of faith turned into a calling. For Bantu, Reaching Higher is more than a radio show — it’s a philosophy that defines how she lives. “The show’s name reminds me to always strive for more — not in a material way, but in purpose,” she explains. “It’s about trusting God, growing, and stretching beyond comfort zones. I want every listener to feel encouraged to do the same.”

Over time, she’s come to see radio as ministry. “People often tell me they listen because I give them hope,” she says. “That’s when I realised this is bigger than just broadcasting — it’s about speaking life. Some even call me Pastor Bantu,” she adds, laughing. “It’s funny, but it’s also humbling. It means the message is reaching hearts.”

Her faith is the anchor that holds everything together. “Before every show, I pray,” she says. “Even in small moments during the day, I ask God for direction. Prayer reminds me that I’m not doing this through my own strength. It keeps me grounded and authentic.”

Authenticity, she believes, is the key to staying relevant in media. “The industry can pressure you to fit into certain boxes,” she says. “But I’ve learned that being true to who God created me to be will always open the right doors. I’d rather use my platform to build people up than to simply be seen.”

Her name, fittingly, carries the weight of her purpose. “Bantu means ‘people’,” she shares. “Everything I do revolves around people — connecting with them, encouraging them, reminding them of their worth. That’s what drives me. It’s not about fame or recognition. It’s about impact.”

Beyond her work on radio, Bantu has become a sought-after MC, voice-over artist, and digital creator — all roles she embraces with the same heart. “Whether I’m hosting an event or recording a campaign, my goal is always the same: to connect and uplift,” she says. “I’ve learned that I don’t have to be anyone else. My power lies in showing up as myself.”

When asked what she would tell her younger self, she pauses for a moment before answering. “I’d tell her she’s enough,” she says softly. “That her voice — the one she thought was too deep — would one day open doors. And I’d remind her that rejection isn’t failure; it’s redirection. When it’s your time, you won’t have to force it.”

As the afternoon light filters through the window, Bantu reflects on what keeps her going after all these years. “Purpose doesn’t need a platform,” she says. “It just needs obedience. If you show up with faith and authenticity, everything else will fall into place.”

That statement seems to sum up who she is — a woman whose faith informs her craft, whose voice carries warmth and conviction, and whose life is a reflection of her message.

Bantu Bungane’s story is one of grace, growth, and unwavering purpose. From a young woman who once doubted her voice to a broadcaster inspiring thousands, she has learned that light doesn’t need to shout to be seen. It simply shines.

And through every word she speaks — whether behind the mic, on stage, or online — she continues to do what she was born to do: reach higher, and help others do the same.
